Java Plum & Natal Plum Sauce

INTRODUCTION

We made this sweet and tart sauce as an alternative to cranberry sauce for our traditional Thanksgiving meal.

Cranberries don’t grow here, but there are natal plums everywhere – you’ve probably seen these egg-shaped red fruits on hedgerows in parking lots and alongside roads.

INGREDIENTS

1 cup Java Plum fruits, seeded

2 cups natal plums, chopped

1/2 cup coconut sugar

1 tablespoon cinnamon

1 vanilla bean

3 star anise

STEP 1

Add all ingredients to a pot. Heat on low, stirring frequently.

STEP 2

Allow mixture to simmer, releasing the juice of the fruit. Cook for 30 minutes to an hour. Remove from heat.

STEP 3

Once cool, blend the mixture on low speed until smooth.

STEP 4

Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator, or freeze.
