MAUI FORAGER SUNNY SAVAGE LAUNCHES SMARTPHONE APP THAT EMPOWERS COMMUNITIES TO IDENTIFY, HARVEST, AND PREPARE WILD FOOD PLANTS
The Savage Kitchen app uses GPS and crowd-sourced citizen science to link people worldwide with the edible wild foods available in their own backyards.
Wailuku, HI, March 26–Internationally recognized wild food forager and author Sunny Savage, a Maui resident, announced today the launch of Savage Kitchen, a free mobile app that encourages citizen science through local, crowdsourced plant identification, safe and responsible wild food foraging, and provides healthy recipes to prepare. The Savage Kitchen app is available today for free download on the App Store (for iOS) and Google Play (for Android).
The first release of the Savage Kitchen app provides educational learning modules, photographs, and videos to support the user in the knowledge and identification of five wild and invasive plant species–strawberry guava, butterfly ginger, spanish needles, wild amaranth, and java plum–commonly found in the Hawaiian Islands and other tropical and subtropical locations around the globe. Using GPS mapping technology and crowd-sourced data provided by users, the app makes it safe and easy for foragers to locate and access these edible plants on a landscape near them. Users can then utilize dozens of simple recipes to teach foragers how to turn the plants they’ve harvested into nutrient-rich meals. With the focus currently on the Hawaiian Islands for launch, the crowd-sourced, location-based features of the app can work anywhere around the globe.

About Sunny Savage, Founder
Sunny Savage weaves a web of appreciation for the wild things.
Sunny Savage is an internationally recognized wild foods foraging expert, whose life is dedicated to helping the world identify, harvest, and prepare wild plants. She is a sought-after educator and chef– Sunny has taught thousands of people about wild foods, and is often found foraging, cooking, and curating multi-course gourmet meals with top chefs for special events.
A mother of two boys, Sunny has over 20 years’ experience as a forager, and comes from a long line of adventurers. Having visited every continent on the globe before the age of 30, Sunny has spent a year in Antarctica, three years living aboard a sailboat, worked with the Pygmy in Congo, and taught in the Dalai Lama’s temple. Sunny earned a Master’s Degree in Nutrition Education, with a focus on the antioxidants contained in wild greens, and is the author of Wild Food Plants of Hawaii, the first book highlighting foraging in Hawai‘i since Euell Gibbons’ book The Beachcomber’s Handbook (1967). She is the energetic host of Hot on the Trail with Sunny Savage, an adventurous wild food cooking television series that now airs around the globe, and was a headlining chef at the “Taste of Chicago”, the world’s largest food festival. She was selected to present her talk You Can Eat That – The Gift of Wild Foods at TEDxMaui in 2014 and has served as faculty at the White Earth Tribal & Community College, teaching native nutrition and field botany.
Most recently, Sunny has worked diligently for several years developing a dynamic interactive mapping app, Savage Kitchen, that assists people around the state of Hawaii to identify, harvest, and prepare five abundantly available and highly nutritious invasive plant species that are found in Hawai‘i and many other tropical and subtropical regions around the world. The app is built to work worldwide, and includes educational videos and learning modules to support plant identification and basic botanical knowledge, crowdsourced mapping data provided by local citizen scientists, and dozens of easy recipes to support the preparation of these foraged plants.
